While 165 people perished in the fire, many more escaped with their lives, but not necessarily unscathed. Some who got out, stayed behind to help rescue as many people as they could. Others required medical attention, while still others were so traumatized that they wanted only to find a phone to alert their loved ones that they were still alive.
